In 2023, Erika Coachman and I published an article in AILA Review titled “Addressing Race in English Language Teaching.” Our research, conducted at a public school in Rio de Janeiro, explored didactic materials featuring diverse literary voices — from Shakespeare to Mũkoma wa Ngũgĩ and Otávio Júnior.
We found that these materials foster meaningful classroom conversations, helping students see language learning as a powerful tool for citizenship.
